STEP 2 – TREATMENT USING POWER ASSISTED
MICRO-MANIPULATION (PAM)
Irene Phillips at the BackCare Clinic was the first osteopath in the world to be trained using this new high-tech treatment for mechanical problems of the back.
The computerised equipment consists of a “bionic hand” with four pistons powered by compressed air, making it light, safe, efficient and more effective than the hands alone to restore mobility to the joints of the spine. The patient lies faces down on a specially designed treatment plinth, which puts the patient into a form of gentle traction. There is no pulling about of the patient, or high velocity thrusts. The treatment is progressive helping to restore lost suppleness, by moving the joints up and down the spine and stimulating the spinal stretch reflexes.
Most back pain is mechanical. The cause is generally stiffened segments in the middle of the back. Over time, injury, poor posture the spine looses its suppleness and will compensate by more movement in the top and bottom of the spine. This leads to increased wear and tear, until eventually the spine cannot make any compensations and may result in complications such as a prolapsed disc. The aim of treatment is to restore suppleness and movement to the joints.
The treatment can be preventative and enhance sports performance too.
